Fernando: Leave The Radio On

Tutustuinpas tuossa Richmond Fontainen Suomen keikkakiertueella myös muusikkoon nimeltä Fernando.  Telakalla Fernando kera oli Willy Vlautininkin kera soittava lahjakas ja ansioitunut kitaristi Dan Eccles. Suorastaan sääli, että en ollut tutustunut 20 vuoden uralla olevaan Fernandoon aiemmin (totta puhuen en tajunnut kuka Fernando oikeastaan keikalla on, enkä uskonut löytäneeni netin kätköistä oikeaa Fernandoa), sillä silloin ja nyt uusimpaan levyyn tutustuessa puheet hänestä Portlandin helmestä, Fernando Vicicontesta, pitävät kutinsa.

“There’s a good chance that if you don’t live in Portland, Oregon you have never heard of Fernando Viciconte and that’s too bad, because he stands in his own class as a singer and songwriter. This new collection of songs, Leave the Radio On, just might be the best thing he has ever done. Expect Americana, expect Psychedelia, expect to be surprised.”
Peter Buck

Leave The Radio On tyylikäs kokoelma uusia lauluja, joihin kätkeytyy 60-luvun psykedeelistä rockia, folkia, americanaa. Bongaa esimerkiksi The Beatles-vibat. Ja muun muassa The Stone Roses-fanitkin saattavat antaa sydämen levylle. Saattoi olla hilkulla että tätä levyä ei olisi syntynyt muutaman vuoden levytystauon aikana, sillä Vicicontella oli kurkkuongelmia. Vaan onneksi omalaatuisella soundilla varustettu levy syntyi kera Elliot Smithin, M. Wardin, R.E.M:in ja Richmond Fontainen jäsenien.

Omat suosikkini ensi kuulemalta: Levyn melodisesti rokkaava aloitusraita Save Me ja nelosraita tunnelmallinen kaikuileva eksyksissä olemisesta kertova So Loud. Mutta sitten on esimerkiksi herkkä White Trees… Levy löytyy Spotifysta (klikauta kansilevyn kuvaa), mutta haaveilen myös vinyylilevystä.

“Leave The Radio On is as original an album since the concept of records themselves. Blazing a cacaphony of sound and following no blueprint, a bonafide breath of fresh air in a roots music scene that sees way too many impressionist and not enough artist. Viciconte leaves all the blood in the water, enticing the sharks with their constant need to bite on a new edge or sound. By the time the press is done with this record there will be more than a few biters, and rightfully so.”
